Tirzepatide
Tirzepatide is a once-weekly injectable medication used to treat type 2 diabetes, chronic weight management, and moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults with obesity
It is a dual agonist for glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors, making it unique compared to semaglutide, which is a GLP-1 receptor agonist only
Mechanism of Action
Mimics GIP and GLP-1 hormones, which stimulate insulin release after meals, reduce glucagon levels, slow gastric emptying, and suppress appetite
Increases insulin sensitivity and reduces food intake, aiding in blood sugar control and weight loss
Its dual action provides greater efficacy in glycemic control and weight reduction compared to GLP-1-only drugs like semaglutide
