SS-31

SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide designed to target and protect mitochondria, the cellular structures responsible for energy production

SS-31 has shown promise for conditions linked to mitochondrial dysfunction, including:

Kidney Diseases: Protects against ischemia-reperfusion injury, diabetic nephropathy, and age-related glomerulosclerosis reducing oxidative stress and improving mitochondrial morphology

Cardiovascular Diseases: Improves cardiac function, reduces ischemia/reperfusion injury, and stabilizes atherosclerotic plaques. It enhances ATP production and reduces ROS in heart failure models

Neurodegenerative Disorders: Mitigates oxidative stress and inflammation in the hippocampus, improving memory and cognitive function in models of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and lipopolysaccharide-induced cognitive deficits

Mitochondrial Myopathies: Enhances energy production and reduces symptoms in primary mitochondrial diseases, with orphan drug designations for mitochondrial myopathy

Age-Related Conditions: Improves exercise tolerance, muscle mass, and fatigue resistance, suggesting anti-aging potential by restoring mitochondrial energetics

SS-31 also shows therapeutic potential in migraine, pulmonary fibrosis, and burn injury recovery by reducing apoptosis and oxidative damage
